The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming (And Environmentalism)

In this conservative`s expos? of the global warming debate, Christopher Horner pulls no punches when he says that the sky is not falling but that the left is trying to pull the wool over our eyes. In Horner`s view, the whole issue of global warming is based on bad science and has been politicized. He offers evidence to refute what he says are the outrageous and hysterical claims of the environmentalist lobby, and exposes what he sees as the coercive and internationalist efforts by the likes of Al Gore and others (including John McCain and Joe Lieberman), which would, if they were to succeed, undermine our national sovereignty. THE POLITICALLY INCORRECT GUIDE TO GLOBAL WARMING AND ENVIRONMENTALISM is another entry in the popular POLITICALLY INCORRECT series from the conservative publisher Regnery.
The Live Earth Global Warming Survival Handbook

A companion book to the Live Earth concerts of summer 2007 -- printed, of course, on environmentally responsible paper. The Live Earth Global Warming Survival Handbook: 77 Essential Skills to Stop Climate Change - or Live Through It, is a 160-page paperback release written by David De Rothschild, founder of Sculpt the Future, a non-profit environmental foundation, and includes a foreword by actor-director Rob Reiner. Proceeds from the US$14.95 book will be given to the Alliance for Climate Protection, founded by former U.S. vice-president Al Gore, a co-chair of the July 7 2007 Live Earth shows. This innovative and practical handbook supports the crucial mission and message of the Live Earth concerts and aims to inspire each of us to play a role, to do our share, in confronting and attempting to solve the climate crisis, says Steven Pleshette Murphy, president and CEO of publisher Rodale Books.
Divided Planet

The single most accessible presentation of what is known as `social ecology` that has yet been written. -- The Nation Global warming. Soil loss. Freshwater scarcity. Extinction. Overconsumption. Toxic waste production. Habitat and biodiversity erosion. These are only a few of our most urgent ecological crises. There are others as well and, despite the popularity of good-news environmentalism, few of them are going away. In this wide-ranging, grimly entertaining commentary on the environmental debate, Tom Athanasiou finds that these problems are exacerbated, if not caused, by the planet`s division into warring camps of rich and poor. Writing with passionate intelligence, Athanasiou proposes a simple yet radical solution -- stop indulging easy, calming fantasies in which everything seems to change, but nothing important changes at all. Instead, do what needs to be done, now, while there is still time and good will. The bottom line, he concludes, is that there will be no sustainability without a large measure of justice. Without profound political and economic change, he argues, there can be no effective global environmental action, no real effort to save the planet. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
Cool It

A groundbreaking book that transforms the debate about global warming by offering a fresh perspective based on human needs as well as environmental concerns. Bjorn Lomborg argues that many of the elaborate and expensive actions now being considered to stop global warming will cost hundreds of billions of dollars, are often based on emotional rather than strictly scientific assumptions, and may very well have little impact on the world's temperature for hundreds of years. Rather than starting with the most radical procedures, Lomborg argues that we should first focus our resources on more immediate concerns, such as fighting malaria and HIV/AIDS and assuring and maintaining a safe, fresh water supply, which can be addressed at a fraction of the cost and save millions of lives within our lifetime. He asks why the debate over climate change has stifled rational dialogue and killed meaningful dissent. Lomborg presents us with a second generation of thinking on global warming that believes panic is neither warranted nor a constructive place from which to deal with any of humanity's problems, not just global warming. Cool It promises to be one of the most talked about and influential books of our time. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

State Of Fear

Blockbuster writer Michael Crichton's eco-thriller is a dizzying, adventure-packed novel, embedded with a controversial message. A highly organized group of environmental extremists are linked to the bizarre deaths of a graduate student in wave mechanics and a man who leases submarines, as well as the mysterious disappearance of a wealthy donor to environmental causes. Their plan is to raise awareness of global warming by artificially precipitating natural disasters that will reap a high cost in human lives. Crichton uses his fiction to address some very real concerns of his, citing actual scientific research to contend that global warming is probably a nonexistent threat, and that no one is doing anything effective to determine and solve genuine environmental problems. He further suggests that most environmentalists ignore or twist the research of scientists whose evidence contradicts their agenda, that the people running environmental groups are motivated by greed, and that the activists supporting the groups are motivated by ignorance. Some may dismiss the novel as a right-wing polemic; others may find it a chillingly possible vision of things to come. Audio CD Publisher: HarperAudio; Unabridged edition (December 7, 2004) ISBN: 0060786019 Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

In this internationally acclaimed book, Hubert Lamb explores what we know about climate, how the past record of climate can be reconstructed, the causes of climatic variation, and its impact on human affairs now and in the historical and prehistorical past. This second edition incorporates important new material on recent advances in weather forecasting, global warming, the ozone layer, pollution and population growth. Providing a valuable introduction to the problems and results of the most recent research activity, this book extends our understanding of the interactions between climate and history and discusses implications for future climatic fluctuations and forecasting. In FORTY DAYS OF RAIN, flood was the primary danger, causing widespread devastation to Washington, D.C. Now, the melting of the polar ice caps overwhelms the Gulf Stream, resulting in substantial drops in temperature and heralding the dawn of a new Ice Age. Dr. Frank Vanderwal of the National Science Foundation battles government mismanagement and petty politics while he and his fellow scientists seek for some way to get the climate back on track. A global superstorm has already arrived - but it is a storm of hype and hysteria. This ground-breaking book combines impeccable scientific authority with great wit to expose the hysteria surrounding the myths of global warming and climate change.

This first book in a projected trilogy by the author of the Mars series and THE YEARS OF RICE AND SALT is a more realistic, scientific exploration of the issue covered by the disaster movie THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW: the dangerous implications of global warming. Frank Vanderwahl and Anna Quibler (scientists at the NSF) and Anna`s husband Charlie (an environmental adviser to a U. S. Senator) are all struggling to stave off the seemingly inevitable catastrophic climate changes brought on by global warming. While political and scientific quibbling prevent any real action from being taken, the issue is about to become more than theoretical for the inhabitants of Washington, D. C.
Arctic Tale (DVD)

This heartbreaking documentary puts a face on the sad statistics of global warming--and though it's not a human face, it's the perhaps even more effective face of an adorable polar bear cub, Nanu, along with her mother, her brother, and her natural enemy, the equally heart-melting Seela the walrus. With breathtaking footage of life on the arctic tundra, the directors spin a highly emotional tale of the melting ice caps and the effect of their disappearance on every species in the ecosystem. Since the film is essentially aimed at children, the cuteness factor is off the charts, aided by the slightly grating use of sound effects, a slangy voiceover by Queen Latifah, and a kid-friendly pop/folk soundtrack. And, as in a National Geographic special, viewers learn some interesting and neutral facts about polar bears, walruses, narwhals, foxes, and other northern creatures. The narrative, however, returns repeatedly to the grim conditions that are killing off our planet's wildlife, one family at a time. The directors take pains to create a hopeful ending, with a sweet pair of life-goes-on epilogues and a closing credit sequence featuring conservation tips, but the message of the film is sobering and hits its mark with kids and adults alike.
The effects of global warming continue to worsen in this second of a trilogy of near-future environmental thrillers.

The ninetieth edition of this respected series reflects growing 21st-century concerns with global warming, Alzheimer`s disease, and stem cell research, among other phenomena. Its authors are unafraid to challenge accepted wisdom on ordinarily sacrosanct subjects like posttraumatic stress syndrome, here reassessed by The New Yorker`s Malcolm Gladwell, while Esquire`s James McManus`s blend of clear-eyed analysis and visceral reaction to the political debate over procedures that might relieve his daughter`s diabetes is a masterpiece of focused emotion combined with lucid journalism. Intellectually stimulating and sometimes revelatory, these selections accurately portray the often turbulent waters of scientific exploration. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only.
Timeslip - The Complete Series (DVD)

Resembling a 1970s version of QUANTUM LEAP, the British TV show TIMESLIP follows two high-school kids--Simon Randall (Spencer Banks) and Liz Skinner (Cheryl Burfield)--as they travel through time. While on vacation, the two kids discover that they have the ability to go back to the past or forward to the future, and they set off on some wild adventures. Amazingly prescient, the show included what were, at the time, fantastical ideas--ideas that came closer to reality in subsequent decades: we find our two young heroes travelling to an ominous future where cloning is widespread and the ruinous effect of global warming wreaks havoc on the world. A sizeable cult following has kept the show alive over the years, and fans will doubtless be delighted to know that this release contains every TIMESLIP episode ever broadcast.

Two seasoned environmental activists argue that the crisis of global warming is a problem that will not be addressed through the rhetoric and methods of the environmental movement of the past. Ted Nordhaus and Michael Shellenberger propose new ways of talking about global warming, and innovative practical ventures that will grow the clean-energy economy. The outdated legacies of regulations, complaints, and one-issue factionalism, they argue, need to give way to a pragmatic political paradigm of collaboration, investments, and new markets.
Ecotourism

`Ecotourism` outlines the phenomenon of Ecotourism; its sources and its development as a concept. Conservation issues are now at the forefront of public opinion - Nature is calling us to its wilds and we are responding in droves. The decline of natural rainforests, loss of endangered species, global warming and land degradation have galvanised public support for conservation. The interest in Ecotourism and nature-orientated tourism has coincided with this worldwide concern Using relevant case studies, `Ecotourism` examines the potential positive social and environmental benefits of Ecotourism and is ideal for both students of tourism and practitioners within the tourism industry. `Ecotourism` will also be of interest to environmental groups, land managers, academics and planners. Indeed anyone interested in examining what Ecotourism is and how it may hold the potential to solve or at least mitigate several of the great problems of our age. An example being arguably the greatest of these dilemmas: to satisfy human needs for employment, income and economic development, while at the same time protecting the environment. Stephen Wearing and John Neil are both lecturers at the School of Tourism Studies, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia. International examples Contains mix of academic and practitioner writing Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Boiling Point

Exposes how big business, the Bush administration, and environmentalists alike are preventing us from solving the problem of global warming-and offers a prescription for saving the planet In Boiling Point , Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ross Gelbspan argues that, unchecked, climate change will swamp every other issue facing us today. Indeed, what began as an initial response of many institutions-denial and delay-has now grown into a crime against humanity. The fossil fuel industry is directing the Bush administration`s energy and climate policies-payback for helping Bush get elected. But they`re not the only ones to blame: the media and environmental activists are unwittingly worsening the crisis. In his new introduction, Gelbspan reveals that the outlook isn`t getting better. The climate continues to change with increasing acceleration: hurricanes devastated Florida; rainfall patterns left two million people starving in Kenya; 2004 was the fourth hottest year on record. At the same time, the coal industry was planning to sabotage an effort in the Senate to begin to regulate carbon dioxide. Officials of Switzerland, France, and Canada said last year that, when the Kyoto Protocol takes effect, they intend to take the United States to court under the World Trade Organization, reasoning that the U.S.`s refusal to lower their carbon emissions amounts to an illegal subsidy-a carbon subsidy-on its exports. With the reelection of George W. Bush and a Republican-controlled congress, Boiling Point is more imperative than ever. Both a passionate call-to-arms and a thoughtful roadmap for change, Gelbspan reveals what`s at stake for our fragile planet. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only.
Leading by Example: How We Can Inspire an Energy and Security Revolution

We've confused energy security with oil security. In our pursuit of oil security, we've become as isolated and alone as we have been since the world went global. Today, far more of our international situation is related to oil and energy, because we are as energy-hungry as ever, and more energy-dependent than ever. To take just one pressing example, Iran is a threat, and it sits on the world?s second-largest oil reserves. Should we try to work with them or not? The American people say it again and again in polls: Congress is not adopting sensible energy policies, it isn?t even thinking about global warming, it bends over backwards for the oil companies. We should start a ten-year program, right now, to eliminate our dependence on overseas oil. Ten years from now, we should no longer patrol the Persian Gulf with two carrier groups. The underlying principle here is to create competition, to make markets work more efficiently, to eliminate the dominance that oil and coal have created, and bring alternative sources and efficiency to the fore in key sectors.
