Kicking the Carbon Habit

With glaciers melting, oceans growing more acidic, species dying out, and catastrophic events like Hurricane Katrina ever more probable, strong steps must be taken now to slow global warming. Further warming threatens entire regional economies and the well being of whole populations, and in this century alone, it could create a global cataclysm. Synthesizing information from leading scientists and the most up-to-date research, science journalist William Sweet examines what the United States can do to help prevent climate devastation. Rather than focusing on cutting oil consumption, which Sweet argues is expensive and unrealistic, the United States should concentrate on drastically reducing its use of coal. Coal-fired plants, which currently produce more than half of the electricity in the United States, account for two fifths of the country`s greenhouse gas emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Sweet believes a mixture of more environmentally sound technologies-wind turbines, natural gas, and nuclear reactors-can effectively replace coal plants, especially since dramatic improvements in technology have made nuclear power cleaner, safer, and more efficient. Sweet cuts through all the confusion and controversies. He explores dramatic advances made by climate scientists over the past twenty years and addresses the various political and economic issues associated with global warming, including the practicality of reducing emissions from automobiles, the efficacy of taxing energy consumption, and the responsibility of the United States to its citizens and the international community to reduce greenhouse gases. Timely and provocative, Kicking the Carbon Habit is essential reading for anyone interested in environmental science, economics, and the future of the planet. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
Eat Here

Eating locally is a growing movement that is good for your healthand#151;but even better for the planet. Everyone everywhere depends increasingly on long-distance food. Since 1961 the tonnage of food shipped between nations has grown fourfold. In the United States, food typically travels between 1,500 and 2,500 miles from farm to plateand#151;as much as 25 percent farther than in 1980. For some, the long-distance food system offers unparalleled choice. But it often runs roughshod over local cuisines, varieties, and agriculture, while consuming staggering amounts of fuel, generating greenhouse gases, eroding the pleasures of face-to-face interactions, and compromising food security. Fortunately, the long-distance food habit is beginning to weaken under the influence of a young, but surging, local-foods movement. From peanut-butter makers in Zimbabwe to pork producers in Germany and rooftop gardeners in Vancouver, entrepreneurial farmers, start-up food businesses, restaurants, supermarkets, and concerned consumers are propelling a revolution that can help restore rural areas, enrich poor nations, and return fresh, delicious, and wholesome food to cities.
greenhouse+gases

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are the gases present in the earth's atmosphere which reduce the loss of heat into space and therefore contribute to global temperatures through the greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases are essential to maintaining the temperature of the Earth; without them the planet would be so cold as to be uninhabitable. However, an excess of greenhouse gases can raise the temperature of a planet to lethal levels, as on Venus where the 90 bar partial pressure of carbon dioxide (CO2) contributes to a surface temperature of about 467and#160;°C (872and#160;°F). Greenhouse gases are produced by many natural and industrial processes, which currently result in CO2 levels of 380 ppmv in the atmosphere. Based on ice-core samples and records (see graphs) current levels of CO2 are approximately 100 ppmv higher than during immediately pre-industrial times, when direct human influence was negligible.

When sunlight reaches the surface of the Earth, some of it is absorbed and warms the surface. Because the Earth's surface is much cooler than the sun, it radiates energy at much longer wavelengths than the sun does, peaking in the infrared at about 10 µm. The atmosphere absorbs these longer wavelengths more effectively than it does the shorter wavelengths from the sun. The absorption of this longwave radiant energy warms the atmosphere; the atmosphere is also warmed by transfer of sensible and latent heat from the surface. Greenhouse gases also emit longwave radiation both upward to space and downward to the surface. The downward part of this longwave radiation emitted by the atmosphere is the "greenhouse effect". The term is a misnomer though, as this process is not the mechanism that warms greenhouses.

On earth, the most abundant greenhouse gases are, in order of relative abundance:

The most important greenhouse gases are:

It is not possible to state that a certain gas causes a certain percentage of the greenhouse effect, because the influences of the various gases are not additive. (The higher ends of the ranges quoted are for the gas alone; the lower ends, for the gas counting overlaps.)

The major atmospheric constituents (nitrogen, N2 and oxygen, O2) are not greenhouse gases. This is because homonuclear diatomic molecules such as N2 and O2 neither absorb nor emit infrared radiation, as there is no net change in the dipole moment of these molecules when they vibrate. Molecular vibrations occur at energies that are of the same magnitude as the energy of the photons on infrared light. Heteronuclear diatomics such as CO or HCl absorb IR; however, these molecules are short-lived in the atmosphere owing to their reactivity and solubility. As a consequence they do not contribute significantly to the greenhouse effect.

Late 19th century scientists experimentally discovered that N2 and O2 did not absorb infrared radiation (called, at that time, "dark radiation") and that CO2 and many other gases did absorb such radiation. It was recognized in the early 20th century that the known major greenhouse gases in the atmosphere caused the earth's temperature to be higher than it would have been without the greenhouse gases.

Most greenhouse gases have both natural and anthropogenic sources. During the pre-industrial holocene, concentrations of these gases were roughly constant. Since the industrial revolution, concentrations of all the long-lived greenhouse gases have increased due to human actions.

Ice cores provide evidence for variation in greenhouse gas concentrations over the past 800,000 years. Both CO2 and CH4 vary between glacial and interglacial phases, and concentrations of these gases correlate strongly with temperature. Before the ice core record, direct measurements do not exist. Various proxies and modelling suggests large variations; 500 Myr ago CO2 levels were likely 10 times higher than now.

Since about 1750 human activity has increased the concentration of carbon dioxide and of some other important greenhouse gases.

Some of the main sources of greenhouse gases due to human activity include:

The seven sources of CO2 from fossil fuel combustion are (with percentage contributions for 2000–2004):

The U.S. EPA ranks the major greenhouse gas contributing end-user sectors in the following order: industrial, transportation, residential, commercial and agricultural. Major sources of an individual's GHG include home heating and cooling, electricity consumption, and transportation. Corresponding conservation measures are improving home building insulation, compact fluorescent lamps and choosing energy-efficient vehicles.

Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and three groups of fluorinated gases (sulfur hexafluoride, HFCs, and PFCs) are the major greenhouse gases and the subject of the Kyoto Protocol, which came into force in 2005.

Although CFCs are greenhouse gases, they are regulated by the Montreal Protocol, which was motivated by CFCs' contribution to ozone depletion rather than by their contribution to global warming. Note that ozone depletion has only a minor role in greenhouse warming though the two processes often are confused in the media.

Water vapor is a naturally occurring greenhouse gas and accounts for the largest percentage of the greenhouse effect, between 36% and 66%. Water vapor concentrations fluctuate regionally, but human activity does not directly affect water vapor concentrations except at local scales (for example, near irrigated fields).

The Clausius-Clapeyron relation establishes that warmer air can hold more water vapor per unit volume. Current state-of-the-art climate models predict that increasing water vapor concentrations in warmer air will amplify the greenhouse effect created by anthropogenic greenhouse gases while maintaining nearly constant relative humidity. Thus water vapor acts as a positive feedback to the forcing provided by greenhouse gases such as CO2.

Measurements from Antarctic ice cores show that just before industrial emissions started, atmospheric CO2 levels were about 280 parts per million by volume (ppm; the units µL/L are occasionally used and are identical to parts per million by volume). From the same ice cores it appears that CO2 concentrations stayed between 260 and 280 ppm during the preceding 10,000 years. However, because of the way air is trapped in ice and the time period represented in each ice sample analised, these figures are long term averages not annual levels. Studies using evidence from stomata of fossilized leaves suggest greater variability, with CO2 levels above 300 ppm during the period 7,000–10,000 years ago,

Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the concentrations of many of the greenhouse gases have increased. The concentration of CO2 has increased by about 100 ppm (i.e., from 280 ppm to 380 ppm). The first 50 ppm increase took place in about 200 years, from the start of the Industrial Revolution to around 1973; the next 50 ppm increase took place in about 33 years, from 1973 to 2006.. Many observations are available online in a variety of Atmospheric Chemistry Observational Databases. The greenhouse gases with the largest radiative forcing are:

(Source: IPCC radiative forcing report 1994 updated (to 1998) by IPCC TAR table 6.1 ).

The sharp acceleration in CO2 emissions since 2000 of andgt;3% y−1 (andgt;2 ppm y−1) from 1.1% y−1 during the 1990s is attributable to the lapse of formerly declining trends in carbon intensity of both developing and developed nations. Although over 3/4 of cumulative anthropogenic CO2 is still attributable to the developed world, China was responsible for most of global growth in emissions during this period. Localised plummeting emissions associated with the collapse of the Soviet Union have been followed by slow emissions growth in this region due to more efficient energy use, made necessary by the increasing proportion of it that is exported.

The direct emissions from industry have declined due to a constant improvement in energy efficiency, but also to a high penetration of electricity. If one includes indirect emissions, related to the production of electricity, CO2 emissions from industry in Europe are roughly stabilized since 1994.

Atmospheric levels of CO2 have set another new peak, partly a sign of the industrial rise of Asian economies led by China.

The United States emitted 16.3% more GHG in 2005 than it did in 1990. According to a preliminary estimate by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, the largest national producer of CO2 emissions since 2006 has been China with an estimated annual production of about 6200 megatonnes. China is followed by the United States with about 5,800 megatonnes. However the per capita emission figures of China are still about one quarter of those of the US population.

Relative to 2005, China's fossil CO2 emissions increased in 2006 by 8.7%, while in the USA, comparable CO2 emissions decreased in 2006 by 1.4%. The agency notes that its estimates do not include some CO2 sources of uncertain magnitude. These figures rely on national CO2 data that do not include aviation. Although these tonnages are small compared to the CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere, they are significantly larger than pre-industrial levels.

Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration is increasing at an increasing rate. In the 1960s, the average annual increase was only 37% of what it was in 2000 through 2007.

Aside from water vapor, which has a residence time of days, most greenhouse gases take many years to leave the atmosphere. Although it is not easy to know with precision how long it takes greenhouse gases to leave the atmosphere, there are estimates for the principal greenhouse gases.

Greenhouse gases can be removed from the atmosphere by various processes:

Jacob (1999)

The atmospheric lifetime of a species therefore measures the time required to restore equilibrium following an increase in its concentration in the atmosphere. Individual atoms or molecules may be lost or deposited to sinks such as the soil, the oceans and other waters, or vegetation and other biological systems, reducing the excess to background concentrations. The average time taken to achieve this is the mean lifetime. The atmospheric lifetime of CO2 is often incorrectly stated to be only a few years because that is the average time for any CO2 molecule to stay in the atmosphere before being removed by mixing into the ocean, photosynthesis, or other processes. However, this ignores the balancing fluxes of CO2 into the atmosphere from the other reservoirs. It is the net concentration changes of the various greenhouse gases by all sources and sinks that determines atmospheric lifetime, not just the removal processes.

Examples of the atmospheric lifetime and GWP for several greenhouse gases include:

Source: IPCC, table 6.7.

The use of CFC-12 (except some essential uses) has been phased out due to its ozone depleting properties.

Airborne fraction (AF) is the proportion of a emission (e.g. CO2) remaining in the atmosphere after a specified time. Canadell (2007)

The global warming potential (GWP) depends on both the efficiency of the molecule as a greenhouse gas and its atmospheric lifetime. GWP is measured relative to the same mass of CO2 and evaluated for a specific timescale. Thus, if a molecule has a high GWP on a short time scale (say 20 years) but has only a short lifetime, it will have a large GWP on a 20 year scale but a small one on a 100 year scale. Conversely, if a molecule has a longer atmospheric lifetime than CO2 its GWP will increase with time.

Carbon monoxide has an indirect radiative effect by elevating concentrations of methane and tropospheric ozone through scavenging of atmospheric constituents (e.g., the hydroxyl radical, OH) that would otherwise destroy them. Carbon monoxide is created when carbon-containing fuels are burned incompletely. Through natural processes in the atmosphere, it is eventually oxidized to carbon dioxide. Carbon monoxide has an atmospheric lifetime of only a few months and as a consequence is spatially more variable than longer-lived gases.

Another potentially important indirect effect comes from methane, which in addition to its direct radiative impact also contributes to ozone formation. Shindell et al (2005)

Jim Carrey returns to his zany, manic roots in this Capraesque comedy from director Tom Shadyac (ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE and LIAR LIAR). Carrey stars as Bruce Nolan, a television reporter in Buffalo, New York who lives a normal life with his sweet girlfriend Grace (Jennifer Aniston). But Bruce isn`t satisfied, and after a particularly bad day where everything goes wrong, he blames God. After spewing a tirade of curses God`s way, God (Morgan Freeman in a gentlemanly white suit) responds and challenges Bruce to take over and see if he can run things better. Of course, there are some conditions; Bruce can only have the almighty powers for 24 hours and only in the Buffalo area. This doesn`t stop Bruce, and he responds to his newfound powers with selfish, childlike zeal. Like a kid in a candy store, Bruce sets off making one hysterical, yet disastrous, decision after another. He pulls the moon closer to the earth so he can have a more romantic evening with Grace, unaware that his actions cause a tidal wave in Japan and responds to the prayers of the world with a mass-email yes that creates millions of lottery winners, riots, and mayhem. Ultimately, Bruce proves he is only human, and cannot possibly fill God`s shoes, although he has a great time trying. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only.
Whether it is El Nino, global warming, or the end of the world as we know it, more and more people are being forced to come to grips with these questions. Now Is the Hour reminds us that we never know when these changes will come upon us and that we can allay our fears by being prepared. Citing prophesies of past and present Native Americans and her own personal visions, we are warned of the dire consequences of mistreating our Mother Earth and also consoled with the promise that prayer and balanced living can ameliorate the effects of the damage we have already done. With suggestions of how we can begin changing our ways and those of future generations, and very practical guides for emergency preparedness, Now Is the Hour is an inspiring and practical handbook for our perilous times.
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (DVD)

Joseph L. Mankiewicz's bittersweet, sparkling romance between a young widow and a sea captain's ghost weaves a magical tale of immortal love. Determined to live her life the way she wants, newly widowed Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) declines her straitlaced in-laws' demand that she live with them and moves with her daughter (a young Natalie Wood) to the seaside into a cottage haunted by the handsome, blustering Captain Gregg (Rex Harrison). A deal is struck between the two in the wee hours of the morning allowing Lucy to stay in the house and the captain to materialize only in the master bedroom. As they gradually get to know each other better, Lucy's spunk and stubbornness gains first the captain's grudging respect, then his heart. But when another man woos Lucy, both must face that her future lies with the living, not in the spirit world. A timeless romantic favorite, THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR subtly traces the complex development of friendship and love, themes that director Mankiewicz excels with in films such as A LETTER TO THREE WIVES and ALL ABOUT EVE, projecting a keen understanding of the tangled emotions and motives that compel people toward their fates. The film is based on the novel by R.A. Dick and scored by Bernard Herrmann.

Lolling after hours in the farmer's hot tub, Minnie and Moo hardly suspect that aliens are landing just one hill to the west. We see the mite-sized, bug-eyed enemy in alternate chapters, peering through their snooper scope, revving themselves up for an invasion. They mistake the cows for giants, their horns for newfangled weapons, the steaming hot tub for a spaceship moments from liftoff. Minnie and Moo mistake the invaders as mosquitoes, and a hilarious battle ensues -- with an earth-saving flyswatter. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only.
This entertaining guide directs travelers to the off-the-wall and offbeat destinations in Florida, home of gator wrestlers, school bus demolition derbies, Hemingway wannabes, the Fountain of Youth, the Nudist Hall of Fame, and a utopian community based on the premise that the earth is not round, but concave. Additional oddball attractions include a graveyard for roosters, the world?s largest strawberry, the world?s smallest police station, and museums dedicated to seashells, hamburgers, oranges, teddy bears, sponges, air conditioning, and one very old petrified cat.
Margarita Happy Hour (DVD)

Zelda (Eleanor Hutchins) was queen of the artsy downtown scene in Brooklyn--until she decided to have a baby. What happens to the punk princess who becomes a single mom? It's not an easy transition. Her boyfriend, Max (played by indie director Larry Fessenden), who thinks he's the next Jack Kerouac and has a taste for womanizing, alcohol and violence, is little help. To make matters worse, her friends gravitate toward cocaine and very loud music. Zelda tries in vain to sing her baby to sleep as the walls of her communal Brooklyn loft vibrate to the beat of the party. She finds some respite in her weekly meetings with a group of other floozy moms, who bring their toddlers to the margarita happy hour at a local bar. There, the women trade stories and support each other through their difficult journey of young motherhood. Zelda is able to scrape by, picking up some cash as a freelance illustrator for a porn magazine. But after her rock-chick junkie pal, Natali (Holly Ramos), comes back into her life, Zelda starts to wonder whether perhaps it's time for the party to end. Director Ilya Chaiken was herself a single mother living in New York while making this film, and her experiences surely have helped give the characters and story the ring of truth. The film's quintet of single women (reminiscent of the characters on SEX AND THE CITY) are not very glamorous--they are earthy and raw, dealing with the hard realities of trying to mix motherhood with their alternative lifestyles. In their own ways, they succeed. DVD Features: Region 0 Keep Case Anamorphic Widescreen - 1.85:1 Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 - English Additional Release Material: Trailers Interactive Features: Scene Access Interactive Menus Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
Acres of Diamonds

Here is an excellentand much-needed title for high school youth. Acres of Diamonds is a spiritual book. It is not similar to the get-rich-quick books that abound. The author saw that success is a spiritual ideaand that when we succeed in a noble effort, we can bless mankind more than if we are poor. Russell H. Conwell was a ministerand the founder of Temple University. His lecture Acres of Diamonds was delivered personally over 6,000 timesand earned over $4,000,000. (About $145,000,000 in current dollars.) With this he financed the college education of many poorand worthy high school graduates, never forgetting what a hard time he had in putting himself through college. Conwell lived a selfless life, and died in harness at age 82. He lived many lives in one, because he literally worked sixteen hours a day, seven days a week. he believed that each of us is placed here on Earth for one main purpose--to help others. He inspired thousands of peopleand two generations of Americans, many of whom became successesand helped America grow great-- all through the simple but profound concept found in'Acres of diamonds-- all good things are possible-- right where you are--and now! This new (Fall'93) edition is the only complete text edition. Up to now, only a booklet containing the lecture was available. It has a new cover, new biographical material, new foreword, etc. It appears 68 years after Conwell's passing to inspire a new generation. The truthsand principles in this book are as valid today as when the great humanitarian lived. There are many opportunities for success today as in Conwell's age, if not more so, because they are found first and foremost in one's own consciousness. Teachersand parents should use this book for young people in their care. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

Greatest Journeys on Earth - England: The Journeys of Charles Dickens (DVD)

This edition of the GREATEST JOURNEYS series takes viewers on a unique voyage through some of England's most impressive locales. Venturing off the beaten path, this one-hour documentary provides an alternative to traditional sight-seeing programs by focusing on locations other than the popular sights one would expect from a tour of England. A quirky itinerary is used to give viewers a well-rounded sense of English culture, with great emphasis placed on food, leisure, and celebration. Through on-site visits, viewers are able to learn about geography, architecture, history, and the British way of life. Using one of history's most important and influential authors as a jumping point, THE JOURNEYS OF CHARLES DICKENS explores a crucial period of English history. Dickens' famous characters are used as vehicles for examining the cultural, economic, and scientific impact of Queen Victoria's reign, which began in 1837; with Dickens functioning as a central figure, this documentary illustrates how a specific time in history paved the way for England as it exists today.

A groundbreaking study that distinguishes the natural time of the cosmos from artificial mechanistic time. * Reveals September 11 as the signal of the end of artificial time according to the Law of Time. * Long awaited sequel to the author`s bestselling book The Mayan Factor. * Explains the Great Calendar Change of 2004 and its enormous potential for the future of humanity. In TIME and THE TECHNOSPHERE, Jose Arguelles presents a groundbreaking study that distinguishes the natural time of the cosmos from the artificial mechanistic time under which we currently live. Arguelles defines the actual nature of time as the frequency of synchronization. Applying this Law of Time to an understanding of the entire system of life on Earth, he shows that in order to not destroy Earth?s ability to sustain life, we must change our definition of time and adopt a natural harmonic calendar based on the 13-moon 28-day cycle. Until the creation of the Gregorian calendar and the 60-minute hour, most of humanity lived by the 28-day cycle of natural time. The adoption of artificial time has subjected us to a 12:60 time frequency that governs the entire global industrialized civilization?the technosphere. With the collapse of the Twin Towers on September 11, a fissure was created in this artificial technosphere, opening up the noosphere (Earth?s mental envelope). Humanity has a golden opportunity to leave the strife of the past and enter a time of peace by adopting a harmonious natural calendar that will repair the damages caused by the irregular tempo of technospheric time. Our last best chance to adopt this natural time and step into the bright new future promised by the galactic shift of 2012 is the Great Calendar Change of 2004, a new discovery based on the author?s mathematical research into the Mayan calendar first begun in his landmark work The Mayan Factor. In Time and the Technosphere, Arguelles reveals the clear distinction between third-dimensional astrono Copyright (C) Muze

When a Stranger Calls (2006)/When a Stranger Calls (1979) (DVD)

WHEN A STRANGER CALLS (1976): Young babysitter Jill (Carol Kane) is tormented by a series of disturbing phone calls until a cop (Charles Durning) is put on the case to apprehend the caller, who turns out to be a psychotic killer. Seven years later, after the killer is released, he returns to haunt Jill, now a wife and mother. But, having learned her lesson as a girl, she`s now prepared to deal with him. Considered to be one of the most suspenseful films ever made, WHEN A STRANGER CALLS features performances and plot twists that rightfully earned it legendary status. WHEN A STRANGER CALLS (2006): A slick remake of the 1979 original, Simon Wests WHEN A STRANGER CALLS is a contemporary update of a well-known suburban legend. When 16-year-old Jill (newcomer Camilla Belle in the part originally played by Carol Kane) exceeds her cell phone minutes, her parents force her to spend the night babysitting instead of attending a huge bonfire bash. As Jills father drives her to Dr. Mandrakiss house for the evening, we are given the sense from the long drive, spooky music, and winding roads, that the home is literally at the end of the Earth. Perched over the edge of a steamy lake, the mansion-like structure is made entirely of dark wood and glass. With an arboretum built into its center, the palatial home feels both Zen-like and forbidding. With the children already asleep, Jill spends the first hour indulging in secret babysitter pleasures like snooping and trying on Mrs. Mandrakiss jewelry. Without a cell phone or car, and all her friends` phones out of range, Jill is particularly isolated--the perfect victim for a psychopath on the loose. As she begins to get calls from a heavy-breathing stranger, what at first seems like a prank slowly becomes a real threat, creating a panic-filled evening that`s any babysitter`s nightmare. Using modern-day luxuries like caller ID, security alarm systems, and motion-sensor lights to its advantage, the film plays with themes of tec Copyrigh

When a small space probe falls to earth in a remote village of New Mexico, all but two of the town's inhabitants--an infant and an old alcoholic--meet death as their blood turns to powder. After two reconnaissance pilots have also perished, a national state of emergency is declared. The two survivors and the recovered space probe are transported to a mammoth five-story underground laboratory, and a team of scientists--biologist Jeremy Stone (Arthur Hill), microbiologist Ruth Leavitt (Kate Reid), blood chemistry authority Mark Hall (James Olson), and pathologist Charles Dutton (David Wayne)--is swiftly brought to the lab to discover the nature of the deadly organism brought by the space probe. The team is subjected to grueling hours of precautionary decontamination measures--which are filmed with extraordinary art direction in stunning monochromatic sequences--and informed that the laboratory complex is equipped with an automatic self-destruct device that will be triggered should infection spread. Through exhaustive tests, the team learns that the minute organism, dubbed the ANDROMEDA STRAIN, is alien in nature, and the scientists must quickly find a cure before all of humanity is wiped out. Quietly thrilling, with superb pacing from director Robert Wise, THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN, based on the novel by Michael Crichton, is one of the most stylistically beautiful science fiction films ever made.
When a Stranger Calls (DVD)

Using modern-day luxuries like caller ID, security alarm systems, and motion-sensor lights to its advantage, the film plays with themes of technology and wealth, pondering how much protection they actually provide. Clearly targeted at a teenage audience, the PG-13-rated film contains relatively little violence (lacking some of the graphic scenes that most people remember the original by), and instead uses unfamiliar spaces and a sense of the unknown to keep audiences scared.
Learn the terrifying story of two campers who escaped from one of this century`s most destructive volcanoes - Mt. St. Helens. The eruption blew the top off a picturesque mountain, set off the biggest landslide ever recorded, and caused a 60-foot-high, 100-mile-per-hour mudflow that obliterated everything in its path. Also, hear from air travelers who survived a 25,000-foot dive after volcanic dust hit their jet, and from residents who fought lava attacking their homes - and won. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
Bruce Almighty (DVD)

Jim Carrey returns to his zany, manic roots in this Capraesque comedy from director Tom Shadyac (ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE and LIAR LIAR). Carrey stars as Bruce Nolan, a television reporter in Buffalo, New York who lives a normal life with his sweet girlfriend Grace (Jennifer Aniston). But Bruce isn't satisfied, and after a particularly bad day where everything goes wrong, he blames God. After spewing a tirade of curses God's way, God (Morgan Freeman in a gentlemanly white suit) responds and challenges Bruce to take over and see if he can run things better. Of course, there are some conditions; Bruce can only have the almighty powers for 24 hours and only in the Buffalo area. This doesn't stop Bruce, and he responds to his newfound powers with selfish, childlike zeal. Ultimately, Bruce proves he is only human, and cannot possibly fill God's shoes, although he has a great time trying.

Shot on location at an early-20th-century sanatorium in Kentucky built for victims of the White Plague, this well-crafted indie hits all the right notes of Gothic, macabre terror. For a college initiation rite, five young women must spend five hours in the abandoned hospital--supposedly the most haunted place on Earth--but each floor is menaced by its own specter of the past. The only escape is through the tunnel that long ago was used to dispose of the dead bodies that accumulated in this house of horrors. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. Black and White 2 - Battle Of The Gods takes the player back to the world of Eden to face a host of new challenges in a much darker, more sinister game world. Command and Conquer - Generals and Generals - Zero Hour takes you into 21st century combat. As Daisy gets used to life as a working stiff, Ken spends his time drinking and getting high with his best friend Billy (James Hooton), a UFO freak. One day, Daisy discovers her boss, Marlene (Annette Badland), is the leader of a secret society of female Sumo wrestlers from the factory. Daisy joins the society and spends hours after work strengthening her body for an important Sumo match with male Japanese Sumo wrestlers.
He's back. A hero for our millennium. And not a moment too soon, because during the five years (much longer in movie-fan years!) Superman sought his home planet, things changed on his adopted planet. Nations moved on without him. Lois Lane now has a son, a fiance and a Pulitzer for Why the World Doesn't Need Superman. And Lex Luthor has a plan that will destroy millions - no, billions - of lives. Filmmaker Bryan Singer (X-Men) gives the world the Superman it needs, honoring the legend everyone loves while taking it in a powerful new direction. Brandon Routh proves a perfect choice to wear the hero's cape, leading a top cast that includes Kate Bosworth as Lois and Kevin Spacey as Lex. And the thrills - from a sky-grapple with a tumbling jumbo jet to a continent-convulsing showdown - redefine Wow. I'm always around, Superman tells Lois. You'll be glad he is.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2 Disc LE/Blu-ray Disc)

After the action of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN?S CHEST, anti-hero Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is trapped in the netherworld of Davy Jones?s locker. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) has returned from the dead to aid Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) in their quest to rescue the beloved captain. They journey to Singapore to ask for help from notorious pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat), and with this new alliance, they travel to the edge of the earth to find Jack. Then they will join forces with the world?s most powerful pirates to unite against Lord Brackett (Tom Hollander) and the East India Company. AT WORLD?S END is an exercise in excess, boasting a running time of nearly three hours and a labyrinthine map of double- and triple-crosses. Characters return from the dead and change allegiances with ease, thanks to the magic of Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris) and the pirate code of ethics--or lack thereof. Though the third film in the series is filled with action and special effects befitting any blockbuster, it?s the performances that make the movie memorable. Depp has earned an Oscar nod for his role as Jack, but he?s not the only one who shines. With Jack locked away, the film sits on the strong shoulders of Rush, as well as Stellan Skarsgard as Bootstrap Bill and the brilliant British actor Bill Nighy as Davy Jones. Despite having to act behind a mess of CGI tentacles, Nighy nearly steals the show, as in the previous films UNDERWORLD and LOVE ACTUALLY. This is literally and figuratively the darkest entry in director Gore Verbinski?s trilogy, as the film trades the sunny skies of the Caribbean for the world?s most treacherous seas. There?s plenty of rum-soaked humor, but it?s balanced by betrayal and sacrifice. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

While in orbit around the Earth, the crew of Space Shuttle Odyssey witnesses the inconceivable: the complete annihilation of Earth in a fiery explosion. With one crew member dead, another suffering from a concussion, and only nine hours of oxygen left on the ship, the fate of the astronauts seems to be sealed. But then they encounter a mysterious alien entity known as The Seeker that informs them that populated planets across the universe are suffering the same cataclysmic fate as the Earth. Using its strange powers, The Seeker transports the five surviving members of the Odyssey back through time. The members of the crew wake up five years earlier; the Earth still exists, but they all share the same awful memory of what lies in store. Seeking each other out, they must discover the secret of the Bright Sky and figure out the meaning of the last message sent from Earth, a coded warning about something known as Leviathan. If they can`t solve the mystery then history will repeat, and the world will end in inferno. This release contains the entire 19 episodes of the OYDESSY 5 television series.

A comprehensive guide to creating-at home-the country-style breads that have consistently captured the imagination and the taste buds of the world. In a richly told tale, Leader chronicles his crossings of America and Europe to locate the most vital ingredients at the source, to learn from the methods of the world's great bakers, and to perfect their traditional techniques. His recipes are ones that have been used for centuries: large sourdough ryes, rich and dark raisin pumpernickel loaves, real French pain au levain, big round wheats with walnuts, crusty baguettes, high and airy breads, and more. Made from organic, stone-ground grains, these breads are slow-leavened, hand-shaped, and baked to perfection on heated baking tiles. As you read through the recipes, you can almost smell the ancient aroma of baking bread. And as you begin to bake, you will learn the importance of the primary ingredient in great bread: your own observations. These are some, of the breads and techniques you will master: In the chapter Becoming Bread, you will learn to identify and shop for the highest quality flour available. And you will seek it out because you'll taste the difference. Making a poolish will become second nature to you as you master the Learning Recipe: Classic Country-Style Hearth Loaf and its delicious variations. Whatever your schedule, there is a bread for you. In the chapter Straight-Dough Breads: Traditional Breads for a Modern Life-Style, you are shown how to start and finish a recipe in five hours, or morning-to-night, or night-to-night. You will bake sourdough bread in its many forms. By gently introducing the concept of sourdough-how it is made, how it is maintained, and how to get the best flavor from it leader demystifies it and makes it accessible to you. Discover the wonders of rye bread: From the dense and chewy Finnish Sour Rye to the fragrant Danish Light Rye, ev... Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only.
Handcrafted Chinese Chess Game

Enjoy hours of challenging entertainment, for all ages, with this classic Chinese Chess game. This set has been entirely handcrafted from wood and hand-painted by a family of artisans in their small workshop located in Ban Twai, Northern Thailand. Chinese Chess is the most popular board game on earth, having been played in China for nearly 2,000 years. This fast-paced strategy game is similar to European Chess in that the objective is to checkmate the opponent's king, but there are also several notable differences. The pieces are placed and moved on the intersections of the lines and the playing board is divided in half by a river boundary. Also, at the center rear of each battle camp is a 'fortress' where each King and its two Guards are restricted. Set includes: Folding game board 32 wooden disc pieces (16 red, 16 green) Instructions for play The handcrafted nature of this product will produce minor differences in color and sizing. Subtle shade variations will occur from piece to piece, adding to its unique qualities. Measurements are approximate. Imported.

Category 5

As the unsettled social and political weather of summer 1969 played itself out amid the heat of antiwar marches and the battle for civil rights, three regions of the rural South were devastated by the horrifying force of Category 5 Hurricane Camille. Camille`s nearly 200 mile per hour winds and 28-foot storm surge swept away thousands of homes and businesses along the Gulf Coast of Louisiana and Mississippi. Twenty-four oceangoing ships sank or were beached; six offshore drilling platforms collapsed; 198 people drowned. Two days later, Camille dropped 108 billion tons of moisture drawn from the Gulf onto the rural communities of Nelson County, Virginia--nearly three feet of rain in 24 hours. Mountainsides were washed away; quiet brooks became raging torrents; homes and whole communities were simply wash
